“You did the commercial all wrong! I know I didn’t give you a script or direction, but this is not what I had in mind at all. Redo the commercial.”

Sure, maybe if I guess your brain again I might be in the ballpark.

“We need the client to look at the photos used in the commercial, as they are pretty sure some of those people are dead.”

You would think the client would check the pictures before emailing them to me.

“Basically, the professional voice-over does sound good, but it sounds a little too good. We want use more local talent for the testimonial part so it sound authentic.”

Honestly, does any testimonial on TV persuade a viewer to purchase an item that looks like bull shit anyway? It’s all scripted. It always has been scripted. So what is the difference between a professional voice-over and a scripted “real” person with no “voice talent” skills talking? None.

“Why are there black bars on the top and bottom? Can they go away?”

A client was dissatisfied with a commercial I shot in 16×9. She actually requested I zoom in to remove the black bars. Then wondered why the commercial was blurry.

“I paid for this commercial, I’ll read what I want”

I actually had a client hand me a script that was so bad (and had no mention of the business name until the end of the script) that I had to speak up and “suggest” changes to this 1st grade written script. The client then said, “I paid for this commercial, I’ll read what I want.”
